Install Your Own Privacy Fencing With This Guide

Privacy fencing is a great choice for anyone who has kids running around in the yard a lot, pets that can escape through fence posts or who simply doesn't want anyone looking into their yard.

It is not terribly difficult to put in a stockade fence or privacy fence, but it does take some time, especially with the lapse in between to wait for the cement to dry.  It should only take about 2 days to complete, with a day or 2 in between for the cement to set, but unless you have a huge property, more time is not necessary. Consider the fencing prices available for a wooden privacy fence versus a vinyl privacy fence, since that could make a difference in your decision to hire a contractor or not.

A wood privacy fence will be cheaper, but it will require more maintenance and regular treatments or painting. A vinyl one will cost more but is rot and rust free and easy to wash, so the durability might be worth the price.

How to Install it Yourself

1. Measure the area for the fence design to see how many panels you will need. Each panel is usually about 8 feet long with a post in between, so that will give you an idea of the amount of supplies to buy. For added sturdiness, you may want to consider adding an extra post in the middle of the panel, especially if you feel the weather conditions in your area call for a stronger structure.

2. Make marks where your posts will go and delineate the fence area with string to keep track of it.

3. Dig holes 1.5 - 2 feet deep in each location with a post hole digger and center each post in the hole. Fill gravel into the bottom of the holes around the post to avoid any water seeping into the post.

4. Mix concrete and pour it into each hole. Pack it in tightly to ensure the post is stable. Make sure your posts are standing straight, then allow them to set about 24-48 hours.

5. When the cement is dry, nail in your fencing panels as high as you want them.

6. If you are adding a gate, do it last. Attach the hinges onto the gate and then to a post.
