Stockade Fence Installation Guide For Beginners

Picket fences or split rail fences can be very appealing, but if the goal of your fence is to achieve privacy, a stockade fence is one of your best options. If you are in close proximity to your neighbors, have a pool or a hot tub in the backyard or want to reduce some of the noise that travels across the property, a privacy fence is the best method.

It also adds to security since it prevents people from seeing in and planning a way to break in. You also have many options for plain panels or ones that have decorative elements at the top, and there are also semi-private fences that offer some coverage but more openings for light to get in. It can be easily installed on your own, but it does take some time, so follow the guidelines carefully.

How to Install

Stockade Fence

1. Measure your area and lay down string to plot the place the fence design will be installed. Mark where the posts will go and then measure your wood panels to see if they will fit between each post. This is a good safety measure to ensure you have no problems later on if your panels may not be long enough.

2. Dig holes for your posts equidistant from each other at about 12 inches wide. Your holes should be deep enough to bury about 30% of your posts. Your corner posts will be about 6X6" while your other posts will be 4X4". Place gravel into the bottom of the holes to prevent water seepage and then center your posts in the gravel.

3. Mix cement and pour it into the hole to fill it, having a bit of cement over the top to avoid water pooling. Repeat this with all the posts. Wait for them to set about 1-2 days before continuing.

4. Place the panels between the posts and measure them with a level to make sure they are straight. Nail them into the top and bottom of the posts so they are secure. You can adjust the fencing panels to be higher or lower depending on how much privacy you want.

A stockade fence is a great city option, since it is not only attractive and decorative but also offers great privacy from the neighbors. You can embellish it or paint it to be more appealing, but the peace of mind will be worth a lot.
